Historical Note

Red Imported Fire Ants were first discovered in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the fall of 1998. The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, the Nevada Department of Business and Industry, the Nevada Division of Agriculture, and the University of Nevada School of Medicine collaborated on a statewide Fire Ant Alert Public Education Campaign to raise awareness about the dangers the ants pose to animals, the environment, horticulture, personal safety, and tourism.

Abstract

Red Imported Fire Ants were first discovered in Las Vegas, Nevada, in the fall of 1998. The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, the Nevada Department of Business and Industry, the Nevada Division of Agriculture, and the University of Nevada School of Medicine collaborated on a statewide Fire Ant Alert Public Education Campaign to raise awareness about the dangers the ants pose to animals, the environment, horticulture, personal safety, and tourism.
