Administrative History
The Office of the Chancellor was created in 1968, with the position serving as main administrative coordinator for the Board of Regents. With the growth of two campuses and the Desert Research Institute, it divided the authority and responsibility between the chancellor and the presidents. Neil D. Humphrey filled this newly created position, becoming the first Chancellor of the University of Nevada System. The position has remained throughout multiple renamings of the state higher educational system.
The Chancellor is appointed by the Board of Regents to serve as the supervisor of the eight educational system presidents, and the primary liaison between the higher education system and Nevada government and community.
