Scope and Contents

The University Archives Sound Recordings Collection consists of recordings of University commencement program speakers, speeches and interviews by campus administrators and faculty, and interviews with Nevada writers. Of particular interest are Carl Sandburg's address at the 1959 commencement ceremony, the 1963 inaugural broadcast of KUNR, and the Western Writers series that features interviews by prominent regional authors, including Bill Douglass, Shaun Griffin, Teresa Jordan, Steven Nightingale, Nila Northsun, Gailmarie Pahmeier, Kirk Robertson, Bernie Schopen, Emma Sepulveda, and Sally Zanjani. The 1953 commencement program includes the inauguration of University President Minard W. Stout.

Also included are recordings of a memorial service for student body president, Mike Ingersoll, 1966; interviews taken for the University Centennial, 1974, that include students and administrators; interviews by Dale Bohmond and Bernard Jones about the College of Agriculture, 1983, 1984, 1986; taped radio interviews with University President Joseph Crowley, 1985, 1990, 1994.

Abstract

Th University Archives Sound Recordings Collection consists of recordings of a University group that toured Europe in 1950, commencement programs between 1953-1979; Honors Convocations, 1970-1979; KUNR's inaugural program, 1963; a memorial service for student body president, Mike Ingersoll, 1966; interviews taken for the University Centennial, 1974, that include students and administrators; interviews by Dale Bohmond and Bernard Jones about the College of Agriculture, 1983, 1984, 1986; taped radio interviews with University President Joseph Crowley, 1985, 1990, 1994; and the Western Writers Series, 1997. Also included is a taped political commentary by Wallace "Wallie" Warren on the operation of the University, ca. 1957, and a KUNR Monday Night Poetry Reading from 1979. A collection of 5 in. reels, 7 in. reels, and audiocassettes of various University of Nevada events, speeches, and interviews.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Transferred from various campus units. The audiocassette of Carl Sandburg's 1959 commencement address was transferred from the NUB 24/04 University Commencement Records. The Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center donated the audio recordings of the 1950 University Tour Group in 2003.

Processing Information

Identification of event or speaker is from information written on recording containers. In 2013, several of the recordings were transferred onto CD disks. The wire recordings of a University tour group's description of travel in Europe in 1950 were transferred to audiocassettes.
