The Phi Kappa Phi Nevada Chapter collection consists of 3 cubic feet, from 1912 to the present. The records include the charter for the Nevada Chapter, bylaws, correspondence, induction proceedings, faculty member cards, the society's handbook, minutes, permanent student record cards, a transcript of an oral interview with Irving Sandorf about Phi Kappa Phi that was conducted in about 1972, and Susan James' "Heritage of Excellence: The History of Phi Kappa Phi at the University of Nevada, Reno," written for its 80th anniversary in 1992. Of interest are record cards of prominent University of Nevada, Reno, graduates and faculty, including Senator Alan Bible, Senator Pat McCarran, and Nevada Writers Hall of Fame authors Walter Van Tilburg Clark, Dr. Robert Gorrell, Dr. James Hulse, Dr. Charlton Laird, Dr. Russell Elliott, and Dr. Wilbur S. Shepperson.

Historical Note

Nevada chapter established May 4, 1912, at the University of Nevada (Reno), as a college and alumni society composed of all departments. Charter members were selected from department heads with rank of professor.

The Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society was established in 1897 at the University of Maine and was organized as a national fraternity in 1910 as a college and alumni society composed of graduates of all academic departments of American colleges and universities. The University of Nevada Chapter was established on May 4, 1912, with 22 charter faculty members holding the rank of Professor. The University of Nevada was the eighth campus in the USA to establish a Phi Kappa Phi chapter. New members are announced during commencement. The chapter observed its centennial during 2012.

Transfer from Civil Engineering on June 17, 2009. Transfer of the Chapter's charter in 2011.
