John Peter Marschall (1933-2016), originally from Chicago, Illinois, came to Reno in 1968 as a Catholic priest at Our Lady of Wisdom, where he helped begin The Center for Religion and Life. He left the clergy within a few years, married, and began working for UNR as an instructor in the history department. From the history department, Marschall moved on to serve as Interim Director of Finance Administration, January through June 1983, until being appointed Director of University Services in July 1983. He held that position until September 1988, when he was reassigned as Special Assistant to the Vice President for Student Services. In July 1989 Student Services was reorganized and Marschall became Associate Dean for Student Life, which included Residential Life and Housing, Campus Standards, Public Safety, Greek organizations, Fleischmann Planetarium, the Student Union, and Food Services.

Marschall returned to full-time teaching in 1994 and retired from the university in 2002. Upon his death in 2016, he donated his body to the School of Medicine.
