Biographical / Historical

Ramón Goñi Nagore, born in Iruñea in 1893, was one of the first members of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) in Nafarroa during the Second Spanish Republic. In college, he received a degree in Sciences with a specialization in agriculture. He managed a farm in Lerida that was owned by some prominent PNV members: Manuel Aranzadi, Manuel Irujo, and Garcia Larrache brothers Felix and Rufino.

Goñi was one of the PNV’s leading politicians and secretary of the party in Nafarroa. The correspondence from those years showed how Nafarroa members felt about the centralism of PNV in Bilbao. He also was the manager of the newspaper La Voz de Navarra. In 1935, he started to work in the publishing house Aranzadi in Iruñea, where he stayed until he retired. During the Spanish Civil war, he changed his political beliefs and left PNV to join the Requeté Carlista, where he fought against the Republic in the war. After the war, he lived in Iruñea until his death.
