Biographical / Historical

Rodney A. Gallop was born in 1901 in Folkestone, England. He was educated at the Harrow School and King´s College, Cambridge. His strong ties with the Basque Country were formed in early childhood during the winters he spent with his family in Donibane-Lohitzune.

He was interested in Basque language and folklore, specifically music and popular poetry. In 1924, he entered the British Diplomatic Service and lived in Donostia, Hamburg, Belgrade, Athens, Lisbon, Mexico, and Copenhagen. In 1927, the magazines Herria and Bulletin du Musée Basque published his writings. He published A Book of the Basques in 1930 with the Macmillan publisher house in London. During the summer of 1947, Rodney Gallop visited the Basque Country with his friend Philippe Veyrin to prepare an exhibition of pictures of the Basque Country. In September of 1948, Gallop died of an incurable disease he had contracted during his years serving the Foreign Office. Three years after his death, an exhibition titled Pays Basque de France et d´Espagne was organized in Lyon. Almost thirty years after his death, in 1970, the University of Nevada Press published A Book of the Basques again with William A. Douglass as the editor.

After he passed away, his wife, Marjory D.C. Gallop, donated his collection to the Basque Library at the University of Nevada, Reno. It contains books, music scores and photos. The book collection features books about the Basques and the Basque Country written in several languages such as French, Basque, Spanish and German.
