Biographical / Historical
Gorka Aulestia Txakartegi (1932-2021) was a Basque researcher born in 1932 in Ondarroa, Bizkaia. His research focused on Basque literature and linguistics. He received his Ph.D. in Basque Literature from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 1987, with the dissertation El bertsolarismo: literatura oral improvisada en el País Vasco. Between 1980 and 1988, Gorka worked as an instructor in the Basque Studies program at the University of Nevada, Reno. From 1989 until his retirement in 2000, he was a professor of Basque literature at the EUTG center at the University of Deusto in Donostia.
Gorka was a member of the Royal Academy of the Basque Language, Euskaltzaindia, since 1996. Additionally, he was a member of the Sancho el Sabio Foundation and was the co-director of the magazine Sancho el Sabio in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
Aulestia published several books and articles about Basque language and Basque literature. Some of these publications are: Basque-English Dictionary (University of Nevada Press, 1989), Bertsolarismo (Diputación Foral de Vizcaya, 1990), Improvisational Poetry from the Basque Country (University of Nevada Press, 1995); Escritores Vascos (Fundación Caja Vital Kutxa, 1996); The Basque Poetic Tradition (University of Nevada Press, 2000); Los Escritores. Hitos de la Literatura Clásica Euskérica (Fundación Caja Vital Kutxa, 1996).
