Biographical / Historical

The Nevada Range Sheep Owners Association was created in 1942 in Minden, Nevada. The purpose of the Association was to alleviate the sheepherder shortage by seeking ways to import Basques. John B. Dangberg was the first president, Philip Erro was the vice president, and Robert Franklin was the secretary. Other members of the Association were: John Irola, Jose Azparren, Pete Choperena, E.B. Elgorriaga, Fermín Huarte and Casimiro Azparren.

The Nevada Range Sheep Owners Association maintained correspondence with Senator Patrick McCarran from Nevada about immigration laws. They asked for help to provide Nevada with Basque sheepherders. They considered bringing Mexican shepherds of Basque ancestry and Basque refugees of the Spanish Civil War in Mexico.
