Biographical / Historical
Joseba Zulaika was born in Itziar, Gipuzkoa, in 1948. He received his degree in Philosophy at the University of Deusto, in Bilbao, in 1975. In 1977, he obtained his M.A. in Social Anthropology from Memorial University in Newfoundland, Canada. His Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology was awarded in 1982 from Princeton University. After the conferral of his Ph.D., Zulaika returned to the Basque Country to teach Symbolic Anthropology at the University of the Basque Country in Donostia. He was, until his retirement in 2019, a professor and former director of the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno.
His primary research interests include the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum and urban renewal; Basque culture and politics; the international discourse of terrorism; diasporic and global cultures; the city of Bilbao; theories of symbolism, ritual and discourse; and recently, the use of drones with military purposes.
He has published several books and articles such as Basque Violence Metaphor and Sacrament (Reno: University of Nevada Press, 1988), Bertsolariaren jokoa eta jolasa (Donostia-San Sebastián: Baroja, 1987), Crónica de una seducción: El Museo Guggenheim (Madrid: Nerea, 1997), Terror and Taboo: The Follies, Fables and Faces of Terrorism (New York: Routledge, 1996, with William Douglass) and ETAren hautsa (Irun: Alberdania, 2006).
