Dr. Sandra Ott is a full professor at the Center for Basque Studies, University of Nevada, Reno. She holds a D.Phil. in Social Anthropology from Oxford University. She is currently writing about the experiences of Jews in Iparralde and Béarn during the German Occupation (1940-1944) and post-liberation years.

Sandra Ott received her B.A. in English from Pomona College in 1973. She continued her studies at Oxford University, where she got a Diploma in Social Anthropology (1974) and an M.Litt. in Social Anthropology (1976). After having completed her doctorate in 1979, she held various teaching positions in Oxford, England before embarking on a nearly 20-year career in university administration, first with study abroad programs in the Basque Country and then in Great Britain. Since her return to research and teaching as an academic faculty member in 2002, she has worked at the intersections of cultural anthropology and history in her work on the German Occupation of the French Basque Country and the postwar trials of suspected collaborators.

Some of her books about Basque culture and history are The Circle of Mountains: A Basque Shepherding Community (Oxford University Press, 1981), War, Judgment, and Memory in the Basque Borderlands, 1914-1945 (University of Nevada Press, 2008) and Living with the Enemy: German Occupation, Collaboration, and Justice in the Western Pyrenees (1940-1948) (Cambridge University Press, 2017).

In 2007, she received the Millstone Prize in French History and a Faculty Summer Stipend from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2009.
