Scope and Contents
Inventory
The collection contains 5,000 pieces including documents, photographs, plans, charts, diagrams, pamphlets and artifacts from both perspectives (Republican Basques and Spanish Nationalists) of the Spanish Civil War's campaign along the front in the Basque Country.
The collection comprises three series:
Series I. is the collection of seized secret Basque military records and files; Basque battalion documents, military staff and Basque Government officials' correspondence and records; military plans and maps; collections of newspaper clippings from Spanish national and British newspapers covering the Basque cause and the civil war; photographs; and Basque, Republican and UGT flags and other artifacts.
Series II. consists of records and files from the Spanish Nationalists campaign on the northern front-- plans for aerial bombardment of Bizkaian villages; information about Italian and German participation on the northern front; military plans and maps; secret military documents, especially about the planning and capture of the "Avian Rojo"; a file on the Basque painter, Ignacio Zuloaga; collection of pamphlets, posters, declarations, and other documents from the Nationalist occupation after the war; photographs, correspondence and financial reports from Lieutenant Jose Marfa Huarte y Jauregui, Military Commandant of Zarautz.
Series III. comprises published journals, books, and communiques. The various titles Euskal = erria: Publicaci6n defensora y propagandora de las libertades vascas (1931-1932), Republica Espanola: Cortes Constituyentes
(1931), Aberi Eguna (1932), Patria Vasca, Agence D'information Franco-Espagnole (Dec. 1937 - August 1939), and Bulletin D'information Espagnole (March 1937: no. 211 - August 1939: no. 719).

Biographical / Historical
Jose Maria de Huarte y Jauregui, Marques viudo de Vadeterrazo y Grande de Espana, was born in Pamplona in 1898. He received degrees in Philosophy, Linguistics, and Law. He began to work in the Royal and General Archive of Navarre (Archivo Real y General de Navarra) in 1921 and became its director until 1936. He also directed the Boletin de la Comision de Monumentos de Navarra and the Culture Board of the Provincial Council of Navarra.
His research topics were genealogy, heraldic, and nobility. During the twenties and the thirties, he wrote articles in many magazines such as Vida Vasca, Euskalerriaren Alde or Anuario del Comercio, Industria, Profesiones y Tributacion del Pais Vasco. In 1923 he co-authored the book, Nobiliario de Navarra, with José de Rújula. He also wrote about the detention and imprisonment of Bernard D'Echepare.
In 1936, he joined the Nationalist (Francoist) Army as an officer. In 1937, Lieutenant Huarte was the Chief Commander of Zarautz when the national forces took the city. He fought in the northern front in the Basque territories. As the commander, he was able to create and manage a valuable and enormous archive with information of both Republican Basques and fascists of the war. He died in Madrid in 1969.

More than 5,000 documents, manuscripts, maps, photographs, pamphlets, diagrams, charts and artifacts produced by both perspectives (Republican Basques and Spanish Nationalist) of the Spanish Civil War during the northern front campaign in the Basque Country.
Separated Materials
Monographs (Euskal-Erria : publicación defensora y propagadora de las libertades vascas; Aberri Eguna; Patria Vasca; República Española : Cortes Constituyentes; Letter Ouverte à Son Eminence le Cardinal Verdier) and bulletins (Bulletin d'information espagnole; Informations Télégraphiques eta Téléphoniques d'Espagne) originally in boxes BSQAP 0229-0234 are transferred to the library's collection.
