Biographical / Historical
The Orella family's collection collects many documents connected to the story of this family settled in California in the 1850s when Bruno Manuel Francisco Orella arrived.
Bruno Manuel Francisco was the sixth of Francisco Antonio Orella y N azabal' s and Josefa Teresa de Mendizabal y Lecarra's nine children. Both Francisco Antonio and Josefa Teresa were from Zaldibia (Gipuzkoa).
Bruno Manuel Francisco left for America to work as a miner in the 1840's. Lured by California's fame at that time of the gold rush, he settled there and engaged in commerce, being able to amass a vast fortune. He bought a ranch, married Mercedes Gonzalez and had fifteen children.
The Orella family's interesting story, which involves Basques, Native Mexicans and Spanish conquerors -for Bruno Manuel Francisco's wife came from a family whose genealogy was composed by the two latter- offers an overview of the California state's development since its creation.
