Biographical / Historical

Philippe Veyrin (1900-1962) was a French painter and historian who specialised in Basque topics. Although he was born in Lyon, he moved to Donibane-Lohitzune at the age of two, after his mother’s death. Even though, because of health issues, he did not finish his university studies, he became a prominent bascophile. Together with Ramiro Arrue and major Boissel, he founded the Basque and History Museum of Baiona in 1922.

He was a recognised painter, and held exhibitions in Paris, Baiona and Donibane-Lohitzune. Most of his paintings show rural landscapes of the French Basque Country. As a historian, he researched the Basque people. His most notable work was “Les basques de Labourd, de Soule et de Basse-Navarre. Leur histoire et leurs traditions”, which was published by the Basque Museum in Baiona and reissued several times. He received the Hercule-Catenaci prize from the French Academy in 1949. He worked together with several experts in Basque topics, such as José Miguel de Barandiaran and Aita Donistia, and published studies in English, French, Spanish and local journals.
