Biographical / Historical

Doroteo Vicent Elordieta is the grandchild of Prudencio Clemençot Yturburu and Ignacia Ansuategui Rentería. His grandparents were from Elantxobe. In Liverpool, they owned a Basque hostel at 41 Hurst Street. Prudencio Clemençot also worked for the White Star Line company as an agent. With the help of his wife, they started to arrange transoceanic travel for Basques. Many of the Basques who traveled to America through Liverpool made a stop at the Clemençot hostel. Prudencio and Ignacia recorded the names, origins and destinations of the Basques traveling to America who stayed at their hotel.

Prudencio Clemençot and Ignacia Ansuategui had a daughter, Saturnina Clemençot (born in Liverpool in 1982 and died in Formby in 1981). Saturnina married Doroteo Vicente Elordieta in 1908. Doroteo Vicente Elordieta was born in 1883 in Gautegiz Arteaga (Bizkaia). He worked for the Larrinaga line. He was lost at sea when the boat he was working on, the SS Esperanza de Larrinaga, sank in 1921. Saturnina and Doroteo had a son, Vicente Doroteo Elordieta y Clemençot (1910-2004). Vicente worked as a seaman and later immigrated to Canada. He corresponded with Jeronima Echeverria and William A. Douglass, to whom he related the history of his grandparents’ hostel.
