Bibliography

Henningsen is a specialist in popular traditions, with a master’s degree in Nordic folklore by the University of Copenhagen. He is the author of The Witches’ Advocate: Basque Witchcraft and the Spanish Inquisition, 1609-1614, which has become the reference book for the study of witchcraft in Early Modern times. Even though his interest in witchcraft began in Denmark, he soon moved to study it in Spain, starting in Galicia. He wrote his Ph.D. on witchcraft in Spain, which he later published as The Witches’ Advocate. His research has been focused on the systematic analysis of the “Database of the Holy Office”, i.e., the deposit of the Inquisition archives and documentation. He is currently retired and resides in Spain since 2002.
