Biographical / Historical
Francisco de Gorritxo was born in Bilbao in 1906. He was a commander of the Basque army. After he completed his military service in Africa, he became an instructor of the Milicias Vascas. He belonged to several companies during the Spanish Civil War. After the establishment of the Basque Government, he joined the Euzko Gudarostea and became captain of the Bizkaigana. He took part in the battles of Elgeta, Intxorta, Antzagane and Bilbao.
Francisco went into exile in France and, in 1940, he immigrated to Chile. In Chile, he worked as the secretary of the Basque Youth (Juventud Vasca). He helped establish the Basque Government Delegation, the foreign office of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) and Euzkadi Information Monthly, alongside Shanti Zarranz and others. He moved to Argentina in 1947, where he married his wife, Nekane Corta. In 1955, Francisco became the secretary of Denak Bat, a position he occupied for several mandates. From 1965 to 1966, he served as vice president of Federación de Entidades Vasco-Argentinas (FEVA). He died in Mar de Plata, Argentina, in 1993.
