Biographical / Historical
Miguel Ángel Astiz (Iruñea, 1919 – Barakaldo, 1984) was a journalist who fought against the Republic in the Spanish Civil War. However, he spent several times in prison under Franco, first during the war and later in the first years of the dictatorship. He worked for many newspapers, such as El Pensamiento Navarro, El Carmen, Oye, etc. In 1946, he moved to Bilbao, where he started working at La Gaceta del Norte in 1955. He worked there until 1984. He became a member of Euskaltzaindia and helped create the Kili-kili children’s magazine. In 1984, the regional government of Bizkaia paid tribute to him. He died later that year.
