Abstract

Several books collected by Emilia Doyaga regarding various Basque topics.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Emilia Sarriugarte Doyaga (1925-2020) was a first-generation Basque American. Her parents emigrated from Bizkaia in 1920, specifically from the towns of Bakio and Berriz. She was raised in Basque. She worked as a professor at St. John’s University, Brooklyn College, and York College. She served as Dean at York College and Academic Vice President at the State University of New York. The State University of New York nominated her as Distinguished Teaching Professor.

Emilia Doyaga worked for years to promote the Basque heritage and culture in the United States of America. She was a member of the Euzko-Etxea of New York, where she held top positions, the Society of Basque Studies in America and the Basque International Cultural Center in New York. She was a NABO delegate for more than a decade and was selected by the Basque Government to attend the World Congress of Basque Centers in 1995 and 1999, and the American Congress of Basque Centers in 1997. She created and moderated the Basque Hall of Fame for many years. She played a crucial role in the commissioning and construction of the Sheepherder Monument in Reno, NV, together with the Society of Basque Studies in America.
