Biographical / Historical
Anita Anacabe Franzoia was born and raised in Elko, Nevada. Her father, Joe, came to Nevada in 1901 and her mother, Margaret, in 1953. Both her parents immigrated from Bizkaia. She has owned and operated Anacabe's Store/ Elko General Merchandise since 1976. The business was started in the early 1920s in Northern Nevada and has been in the present location since 1936. She graduated from Boise State University in 1977, with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Business Education with an emphasis in Distributive Education and a minor in Spanish. She spent one year with the UNR, BSU program in OƱati, Gipuzkoa.
Anita is a current member of the Euzkaldunak clubs in Elko and Boise and has served as a NABO representative for Elko. Three times she has been president of Elko Euzkaldunak. She is part-time faculty at Great Basin College in Elko teaching Spanish and Basque and has been a past GBC Foundation member and current Nursing Advisory Board Member.
Anita is married to Michael J. Franzoia, former mayor of Elko (1995-2011), who also attended the Basque Studies Program in Donostia. She has four children: Teresa, Andrea, Mateo and Kristina.
