Abstract
Bender's letter of June 30 to William J. Westerfield, V&TRR agent for the Virginia City, Nevada station, and later Nevada State Senator, asks about a shipment of coal and a missing cord of wood and comments on a horrible disaster in Virginia City. Westerfield's response of July 1 on the verso accounts for the wood and coal, provides details of the June 29th explosion and fire and their cause, and tells of a recent shooting in town.

The Southern Development Company of Nevada was incorporated on October 6, 1881. Among the stated purposes of the company were to buy and sell land, build and operate toll roads, locate and hold water rights and privileges in order to construct waterways and systems, and to acquire lands for timbering.
