The University of Nevada began in Elko, Nevada, but never attracted more than thirty-five students in a single year. In 1885, the legislature made arrangements for moving the institution to Reno. Walter Danforth Bliss was born in Nevada on August 23, 1872, the second youngest child of Duane Leroy Bliss, Sr. and Elizabeth T. Tobey Bliss. His father co-founded the Carson and Tahoe Lumber and Fluming Company in 1873. Walter earned a Bachelor of Science degree in architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in about 1895 and worked as a draftsman with McKim, Mead and White Architects in New York, New York, from 1895-1898.
