Overview Leon W. Hartman (1876-1943) was a professor of Physics at the University of Nevada from 1909-1938 when he became acting president upon the resignation of President Walter E. Clark. He was inaugurated as President on December 15, 1939, serving in that capacity until his death on August 27, 1943, in Palo Alto, California. His presidential portrait was unveiled on May 7, 1945.
