Abstract First letter to "Sister Jane" [Newton], June 19, 1864, tells of Chandler's journey; his visits with Jane's husband, a mine superintendent and mining stock holder; fluctuations in mining stock prices; and descriptions of Virginia City. The second letter to Jane of Sept. 7, 1868 from Clan Alpine, Churchill County, Nevada, is in response to her inquiries about her husband from whom she has not heard in two years; and about early Nevada mining, gambling, business affairs, and the railroad.
