Abstract Complaint in the case of Allison (Eilley Orrum) Bowers, executrix of the last will of L. S. (Sandy) Bowers vs the Mexican Gold and Silver Mining Company and the Union Consolidated Silver Mining Company, alleging that the defendants infringed on her mining claim in Virginia City.
Abstract Included are a cash journal for the Mexican Milling Company, 1916-1920; mill book, 1915-1920; and survey book of the Con Virginia, Ophir, Mexican, Union, and Sierra Nevada mines, .,The mill book records tonage of raw material, gold and silver extracted, and "tails;" surveys record excavation progress in the shafts. This collection also contains a report by Charles Liddell, "Study of the Ventilation Problems of the North End Mines of the Comstock," 1914.
Overview The Union Mine was Part of the North End Mines of the Comstock Lode, the Union was an 1859 stake of 302 feet between the Mexican and Sierra Nevada Mines. Later, 270 additional feet were acquired from the North Ophir claim. Work began in 1860; although the Union had one of the deepest works (at 3350 feet), it was one of the least profitable of the Comstock; by the late 1870s it was producing no ore.
