Abstract George Wharton James was an author of books about the Western United States. Incomplete manuscript account of James' 1887 vacation with Joseph LeConte and LeConte's son in Surprise Valley, northeastern California. James describes his trip to Reno, Nevada, to pick up LeConte and his son, the physical appearance of LeConte and his gear, and the trip from Reno to Surprise Valley. Also included is a copy of the pages of LeConte's published autobiography describing this trip. Material from 1881.
