Rachel Updyke was born in Greenwood, New York and moved as a teacher to Pyramid, Nevada between 1900 and 1910. The collection contains one postcard written by Rachel to Lida Cook on January 23, 1910. Rachel talks about living on the edge of a lake, which we know from the postmark is Pyramid Lake.

Abstract

On July 4, 1910, in Reno, Nevada, the "Fight of the Century" boxing match took place between Jack Johnson and James "Jim" Jeffries. The collection contains one postcard sent by George W. Haigh from Reno, Nevada, to C. O. Rinehard in Seattle, Washington on July 4, 1910, right after the conclusion of the famous Johnson-Jeffries prize fight.

Abstract W. G. Douglass served as the Secretary of the State (1903-1911) and Clerk of the Supreme Court (1903-1911), an unusual position that was deemed to be unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 1910. From 1864-1895, they were two separate positions, and were consolidated into one from 1895-1910. Douglass was one of two men to serve in both positions simultaneously. Formerly tipped into Norris' book Family gathering: the memoirs of Kathleen Norris (Garden City, N.Y.: Doubleday and Company, 1959). Also, a postcard from Norris to Bertha M. Rice about Rice's accident and a book Norris was sending. Tipped into Norris' book Noon an autobiographical sketch.

Stanley Gustavus Palmer (1887-1975) and Ethel Grace Prouty (1887-1947) were residents of Reno, Nevada and attended the University of Nevada. Stanley was an instructor, professor, and dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Nevada from 1915-1957. The collection contains personal papers and photographs taken by Stanley as well as postcards from the Prouty family.

Washoe County, Nevada Postmark Collection

Abstract

The collection contains five postcards and envelopes with Washoe County post office postmarks, including one from Steamboat (1909), two from Wadsworth (1879 and circa 1880s), one from Flanigan (1951) and one from Pyramid (1954). The 1879 postmark from Wadsworth is written to a William Smith in White Planes, Nevada which was the site of an early 1870s salt discovery. The postcard was written six months before the post office was established there.
